The Cruze is available in three trim specifications: the L, LS and range-topping LT models. The entry level and LS models are equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder DOHC petrol engine that delivers 83kW of power. The LS Chevy Cruze features a 1.8-litre four-cylinder DOHC petrol engine with variable valve timing (which improves the engine’s efficiency) and which achieves 104kW of power. Five-speed manual transmission is available in the L and LS models, while the LT model has six-speed automatic transmission.
New in these Chevys is their increased wheelbase – 2.4 inches longer than their predecessor – plus wider tracks and 16-inch and 17-inch all-season tyres with alloy rims. Front struts combined with a rear torsion axle beam create steady and supple handling on the road, with the result that the Cruze is steady and responsive while turning corners and cruising at high speeds. An excellent combination of lightness and feeling makes the Cruze’s electric speed-proportional power steering easy to use, while the tilt-adjustable steering column creates comfortable driving. Audio and cruise control are mounted on the steering wheel so that you can adjust settings easily.
When designing the Cruze, General Motors focussed on creating a “global” car that would sell internationally, which goes a long way to explaining the European look and sporty design touches that define the Chevrolet Cruze. By no means overly branded or flashy, the Cruze has a nicely steeped roofline that curves gently into its windscreen. The racy rear lights and accompanying insignia (in the bow-tie logo) pick up the sporty touches, while halogen headlamps, colour-coded bumpers and chrome door handles (in the ST) offer drivers a sense of luxury. Wider and longer than its competitors, the Cruze has bold headlight housings and broadly spaced wheels with minimal overhands, giving the overall impression of strength.
The list of features in the Chevrolet Cruze is lengthy and impressive: air-conditioning, front and rear power windows, remote keyless entry, a CD audio system, a USB port and auxiliary connector, front bucket seats and split-fold rear seats. In the TS trim interior, features include climate and cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls, two-tone leather-covered seats and an optional sun roof. Leg and elbow room in the back is ample for three adults, while owing to indentations behind the wheel arches, boot room is spacious. The centre console is practically styled, while adjustable cup holders between the front seats allow for a cup of coffee on the way to work.
The Chevy Cruze ranks favourably in terms of safety with driver and passenger side and curtain airbags as well as child seat LATCH anchors, which allow for the secure deployment of a child seat within the Cruze. A car alarm, immobiliser and keyless entry and ignition are secondary safety features which support the “get in and go” adage that underpins the Cruze. Ultrasonic rear parking is a technological aid that uses ultrasonic waves sent via sensors in the Cruze’s rear fascia when the car is driven in reverse at low speeds so as to help drivers park safely. All of these safety features combine to earn the Chevrolet Cruze an impressive five points in the European NCAP Safety Ratings.
Insulated effectively against wind and road noise, the Cruze’s drive quality is superb, and after you push the small start/stop button that lies towards the left of the steering column (provided that you have the clutch pressed in), the capable Cruze engine will spring quietly to life. You can make your Cruze uniquely yours by ordering accessories through CMH auto sales.
